Preschool Shoots - Calgary, Langdon and Airdrie Area Photographer

~~After a little break for some Snowboarding this weekend in Fernie I am back with the Blog Marathon.~~

After a looong break that started with a Snowboarding trip and ended with a broken and then fixed again computer (thank goodness for backups!) I am back with what I am a little sad to report...

...this is the second last installment of my blog marathon...

I had the great opportunity to shoot 3 preschools this year.

Bright Explorations in Airdrie which also has a awesome store front with all kinds of supplies for teacher, games, toys, books and more that are designed to help you engage, guide and nurture the children in your life.

Kidz Choice Preschool in the NW of Calgary, and Happy Learners Preschool in the SE of Calgary.

It was a lot of work including photographing over 220 children. Well worth it though as I got to meet some amazing kids and had a great time trying to, as I say, 'Break' them out of their shyness to capture a little bit of their actual personalities.

In these image you will find some just simply adorable to some just plain silly photos, but most of all I hope you can see what fun they all had!

Knopp Family - Chestermere Family Photographer

This is the Knopp Family. They have been working for some time now as they have built this house with their own hands and are sooo close to being finished. I must say they are doing a great job and everything looked amazing.

I myself can not imagine taking on a task like that, as I like to 'start' big projects but occasionally wonder why I started such a thing in the first place. But when all is done I am always glad that I started, and I know these guys will be very excited once they are finally finished and all moved in.

We did this shoot as fast as possible on a very windy day in Chestermere, once again the wind would wreak havoc on my umbrellas and stands and force me to have to buy new ones, but sometimes I don't mind shopping for Photography gear..

Congrats on such an amazing feat guys and thanks for being 7th in line in my Blog Marathon!

Eva is also part of my wife's day home and we both have become quite attached to her. She has grown so much since she first started coming here and we have certainly seen her change tremendously. Where once was a shy, timid little one is now so out going, loving and open. With a new sibling brewing for her and her parents I am sure it is going to be super interesting to see her grow more as a little person and also as a big sister...

This years mini sessions were very short and sweet. Two of them ended up being children from my wife's day home so I knew them fairly well already, which made things that much easier.

This little guy certainly likes when I have to play with him, especially when I am wrestling with all the kids and having tickle fights. He brought Mom and Dad with him to a mini session this year so they could get a couple family photos for Christmas.

Late last year I shot a few preschools (that Blog Post is coming soon). One of which was Happy Learners Preschool in Erin Woods. When I was done shooting the owner asked if we could also do a family shoot before the holidays. I luckily was able to squeeze in a session for them just in time.

After we had this session we also decided that we have to do a lifestyle session in the spring. We've talked about guns, dishes and the woods.. I am looking forward to that shoot!

Deb and Rick are some pretty down to earth yet fun people and I was so glad to have the opportunity to shoot their wedding last year!

They got hitched at St Pauls Catholic Church in Airdrie, and then we went all around town to various locations I had scoped out earlier. One of which is one of my favorite group shots of all time ( see above ).

Rachel and Steve Married - Calgary Wedding Photographer

Rachel and Steve's wedding was held at the Heritage Pointe Golf Course in the SE of Calgary. Rachel and her Maid of Honour and one of the bridesmen had their hair and makeup done (Yeah you read that right..Bridesmen! Just one girl in this wedding party of 11) at the MOH's house. Dallas made some egg sandwiches for breakfast and everyone had a few "Bubbly Orange Juices" if you know what I mean...

From there we headed over to the golf course where my Brother met us to second shoot for me. It wasn't long but I had a few moments with the groom to be and made a couple awesome portraits of him before the ceremony.

The ceremony was outside on the patio and when it was time for the rings Dallas decided to run back inside... Yup that's right she forgot them in her purse inside.. She didn't take long though and everything went smooth from there on out.

Once the ceremony ended and it was time for formals and then off into the wonders of the Course for some fun! We got to go to a few locations on the course and we had fun with the bridal party.
I LOVED that I had a ton of 'extra' time for some portraits of just the Bride and Groom. We wandered around the Club house to a few locations I had picked out when I had scouted the course early in the week. After I got the ones I wanted I gave the two of them some time by themselves to just be together and enjoy some quite time in the middle of their crazy busy day!

We got some gear set up in the reception hall and it was time to get to the toasts and the dancing... some epic toasts and there was tears and laughter as usual.

These guys and gals are awesome and it was very refreshing to see a group of such tightly knit friends. They definitely had some fun and had more great memories to add to the one they already have together.

It was an honour to spend the day with them!

Anscombe Family at Elbow Falls - Calgary Family Photograper

The Anscombe Family made the trek out to meet me at Elbow Falls for some Fall family portraits.
On the drive I was worried as the sky was pretty dark out west and it seemed we were going to lose all great afternoon light before the shoot!

I drove with my fingers crossed the whole way (is that distracted driving?). And once I got there I was sooo happy. The clouds broke and I knew we were going to have an awesome session.

There were a few times when 'Mom' was a little worried on the edge of the falls. It did get windy and my sand bag wasn't enough to hold down my light stand anymore, so I found a rock. A ~~huge~~ rather large rock, if I don't say so myself, and I carried to my stand to use as an anchor. Low and Behold it wasn't large enough and I lost another good umbrella to the cause but I think in the end it was well worth it.

Lynette and Mark Get Hitched - Cranbrook wedding photographer

Here it is! My Moyie Lake/Eagles Nest Resort Wedding. I started my day with Lynette, her bridesmaids and her daughters at the Taupe Hair Salon in Cranbrook. And what better Canadian way to start than with some good ol' Tim Horton's coffee's!

Lynette and Mark wanted to do things differently for their wedding and we came up with some good fun ideas for pictures. But it wasn't just the pictures it was the whole wedding, right from the vows you knew it was going to be fun, with such things as " Do you promise not to talk during the 7th game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs?" This kind of humor was perfect as the two of them are always joking around. At one point I was waiting to see if the dress was coming off to reveal a Hockey Jersey...

Baby Shane - Calgary Newborn Photographer

Not so long ago I had the opportunity to shoot Kylie and Darren for their Maternity shoot. That shoot can be seen here.
After I got home from a surprise trip to Vegas for my 30th birthday (Thanks my wonderful hunny!)
I made sure to get over to Darren and Kylie's house as I knew they had already had their new bundle of joy.

Now Shane was a little older than a 'regular' newborn shoot so I new that he wouldn't be so sleepy all the time. I knew he would pee on some of my props and I knew that Mom and Dad would stress about him 'not cooperating'. So as usual I let them know that I just want to capture him as he is and if that means he pees on my stuff or wants to be awake for the shoot that we can handle anything that comes our way!

And he did end up peeing and was awake most of the time but in the end I think it was a very successful shoot and we got enough images to cover the walls of the nursery for sure!

Hot Air Balloon Ride - Calgary Photographer

Last Sunday my wife and I finally had the chance to use my first year wedding gift, which is from 3
years ago. Jenn had purchased a Sundance Hot Air Balloon ride for us to use, but when we got to our scheduled fly date Jenn was pregnant with our third child, Cameron, and low and behold they don't fly pregnant women.

So we said we would reschedule... when I finally stopped procrastinating and made the reservations they were all booked up and we couldn't fly at the time we wanted to. So there we had to book in for the following year but at least we had a date set!

August 14th came a few short days after we got back from an epic 30th birthday week in Las Vegas (thanks hunny!) and we were off at a ridiculous time in the morning to go flying.

Were we worried? ~~Nah~~ maybe a little. Were we excited? yes a lot! Was it amazing? HELL YEAH.
Its was a crazy thing just floating around up there checking everything out, a crazy feeling of awesomeness and nervousness that I would love to do all over again. I highly recommend going on a balloon ride the next time you want to try something different.

And here are bunch of photos after what ends up being a lot of words!

I CAN SEE MY HOUSE FROM HERE! That's the car in the front and the newly shingled roof that looks like it may be two colors...

At one point we were VERY close to landing but changed our minds when we realized it was an

Alf-alfa Field. We "dusted" the crop with the bottom of the basket for about 20 feet.

In the end we landed safely and helped pack everything up so we could head to Chestermere.

Once in chestermere we had a Champagne Toast as it is a old French tradition...9:30am and drinking, I think we thought we were back in Vegas!

Levi is awesome - Airdrie Children Photographer

Here is a little man that was such a pleasure to photograph he almost made it... dare I say it...easy!

I used a simple set up in their living room and matched the same lighting I had used when I photographed his brother at Bright Explorations Preschool. That blog post can be seen here.

Levi was a natural in front of the camera. He hammed it up when I needed him to and he was relaxed when I needed that as well. We played, we laughed and we talked. I found out he was really loved his blanket...so why not have a picture with it...he likes to show off his tummy, so we gotta make sure we get that... he also is quite the artist so at the end of the session I let him color on my backdrop and even invited his brother in on the action for a few photos.

I think those are the things that as a parent you don't want to forget, because when they go off to college you may want to remember those little pieces of their personality past.

It was a fun session with a great family. I am very thankful to have been invited into their home to capture this little mans personality.

Kylie and Darren are Expecting - Calgary Maternity Photographer

Like the post title says, this awesome couple is expecting a new bundle of joy any day now! I had decided I wanted to get a few different locations done in this one session so I chose to go to the Ramsay area. Problem was in all my planning for the shoot I overlooked the fact that it was sneak a peek for The Calgary Stampede that night. That meant no parking in and or around that area, without a proper local resident parking pass.

I got there early to scope out the locations I had in mind and good thing because I had to sweet talk the Parking Patrol to allow me to park in the area. I got the okay with a warning of 'even if the guys come by they could be ruthless and still tag and tow you'. So off we went to get the shoot done! During the session I was stressing a bit, and a few times I had to look around to see if there was any patrols around. As lucky as we could be we didn't end up getting a ticket or towed! All though thinking about it, even if I had it still would have been worth it to hang out with these guys and get some seriously awesome photos!

I am excited to meet their little one when he/she arrives and get some more great photos to add to the portfolio and grace their walls!

50th Birthday Luau - Calgary Event Photographer

For the past few months there has been many a night of planning and organizing in our house and a few others too. Busy planning a surprise 50th Birthday for my Mother in-law, Shannon. This was one of the hardest surprise birthday parties to try to arrange, you see, Shannon knows everybodys routines and how they don't stray from them. So when Andy said he didn't want to race, Cody said he had to work, Jenn wasn't able to go to Edmonton to race and all of a sudden Melissa had to go to work on Saturday she had to have known that something was up.

Getting her out of the house was another chore. How often does Shannon get a call from Val to go out and get her hair done and have some lunch? Well lets say it doens't happen often she did finally agree to go but it was a lot later than we had hoped to get started setting up!

Lots of people helped get all the things lined up during the day, coming out to Bearspaw to help set up tents, chairs, pull the pork, cut the buns, set up the tiki bar, pick up and set up the Maragrita mixer, put up decorations and limbo bar, water Shannons flowers and Valet all the guests cars outta sight so it could still be a surprise.

The biggest tip off to her was when Andy called and said he was getting hungry and was wondering when she was coming home...that NEVER happens, he would work on the cars until midnight without coming in to eat if it were up to him! She came home wondering what was up but had no idea that all her family and friends would be there with a Luau set up in the back yard!

We had a delicious feast consisting of pulled pork, Huli Huli chicken, a few different salads and a spinach salad inside a watermelon, lots of fruit and a few different desserts including one cake(well actually 3) made by none other than my awesome wife.

So was she surprised you ask?

I still think she was! One of my favorite things was when she said "Is that Ben and Donna here, you said you were racing!"

I recently got the chance to connect with an old friend. That friend had just had a new baby who they named Denali. I went and took over their home for a few hours so that we could capture these precious times and have them available longer than our memories will remember. These times go by so fast, and by the time you realize what is happening you just may be calling me to see if I can shoot their wedding!

Babies always seem to look great in black and white it just feels natural to post all these that way. So here is my first all black and white blog post and I really like it! I might just make it a regular occurrence.

Well what can I tell you about this little guy?

I suppose I could write about how I will be his Godfather after this weekend(saweeet), how he weighed in at a mere 820 grams when he was born at only 28 weeks. That when I photographed him he would have been 4 days old if he were full term. How you could consider him a miracle baby as his mother has a heart condition that she was told she wasn't 'supposed' to birth a child and now he has excelled in growth and has been passing all of his preemie tests with flying colors.

Those are some pretty crazy points right there and I could write a lot of stuff about them!

But really I want to keep it short so you can get to enjoying the pictures, so I will say he's little but getting bigger, he's my God Son, and he is awesome!!

Kids are Awesome - Calgary Children Photographer

Last week I had the opportunity to shoot the Bright Explorations Preschool in Airdrie.

There are three classes, and about 18 students in each. Class runs for about two hours, which when you do the math didn' leave me much time with each student to try to capture some of their true personalities as I usually try to do with these shoots.

The first day went really well, better than I had expected that's for sure. Day two started out not so good. The fire alarm went off just as class was about to start, and went on for quite some time. For a while I thought I was going to have to reschedule that classes shoot for another day because just as soon as they got the alarm turned off and we were ready to go inside, it started again! In the end we ended up losing almost an hour of the day because of it. Day three went as good if not better than day one, so no complaints there!

I had all type of personalities to work with, some so excited to meet me and show me the classroom but then in front of the camera' they turned to the shyest you have ever met. Others started out shy and warmed up to me right away. One little girl was so excited when I sat down beside her she pulled on my 'soul patch' (that tuff of facial hair under my lip...) It was quite hilarious!

All in all I had a great time, learnt a few things, met a ton of awesome children and had fun doing it!

Meet Parker!

Just last Sunday I had the absolute pleasure of shooting this little bundle of joy. I had asked mom and dad to ensure he would be sleepy for the shoot and I had no idea that he would sleep for the entire time! They also had some adorable outfits planned for a couple of the shots as they are Saskatchewan Roughriders and Detroit Red Wings fans. Even for the maternity photos they brought matching booties for the teams..remember?

I re-arranged their house at my leisure, moving pictures chairs and even taking all the bedding out of the crib... but I did manage to put it back just where I found it all though.

I recently got the chance to photograph a very awesome family! They graciously opened the door to their home to me for the second time to take over and start moving all the furniture around. Now before you think otherwise I always make sure to put it back right where i found it!

We tried to make sure he was sleepy but he didn't want anything to do with it while I was around! So we worked with what we were dealt and came away with lots of great images for it!

This post has been a while in the making as I was without a computer for darn near a month! Let me tell you how much fun that isn't!

I know something that is real fun, and that is taking some great Maternity photos for an awesome couple!

Schartner Family/Maternity - Calgary Photographer

The Schartner Family... enough said!

Well maybe not, but that's how I feel. This is only a small part of a family that means the world to me. Matt is the youngest of the three children from Earle (RIP we all Love and miss You!) and Shirley Schartner. The Schartner's have been a part of my life for years now, so many that I can't count them. When I was young the two Schartner boys were some of the closest friends of mine, we have many great memories together. I am happy to say that they still are!

I had shot Matt and Larissa's wedding a few years ago in Airdrie. So I was really excited to do the Maternity shots for the newest member of their family!

I made the drive out to Shirley's house in Airdrie, where I was going to meet them, and set up the ol' mobile studio downstairs. When I got to my test shot one of my receiver's shorted out on me and wouldn't work at all (happened when they fell in the wind from a previous shoot.) So I got out my other one just to find out I had left it on and the batteries were dead. No problem I ~~always~~ usually carry lots of extras, and that day I would be without a single spare AAA...

A quick trip to Matt's house to get some, ended with us taking them out of the remote and we were on our way! I re-learned a lesson that day, maybe even two, and I can guarantee that will never happen again! Not everything turns out the way I want or plan it, but the pictures always come out just as I want them too!

Matt is an aspiring photographer as well, so I was hoping to be able to spend some extra time with him and go over why I was putting my lights where I was and go through figuring out the exposures, but with my battery error and a shoot scheduled for later that evening I was running out of time if I had! Sorry Matt, next time at the newborn shoot!

I am looking so forward to early January when I will get to do the Newborn photos for them and to meet the newest edition to the Schartner Family, a family I consider part of my family!

The Oliver Family - Calgary Family Photographer

The Oliver's took part in an offer that I had designed for City of Calgary employees only. Where they get a great deal for being part of what helps our City run smoothly. I met with them early and decided that instead of arranging for them to come to Langdon to my studio that we could do at their house...not a problem at all!
I had ~~invaded~~ set up my studio in their kitchen and proceeded to take some family photos of the 5 of them. It had been a few years since they had any family photos taken, like most families, so I made sure to get a ton of good ones.

Here a few of my favourite from the session!

Christmas Mini Session Part Five - The Zeleny Johnson Family

This couple was referred to me by the always fabulous Jensen Family. The two couples have been friends for years and when the Jensen's had their mini session it was a must for them to get some too.

Although I had already finished all the mini sessions I had scheduled when they had got a hold of me, it was real hard to turn away a great young couple when I had the time to make some great memories!

They came over one night after dinner and we did a mini session just for them!

The pictures turned out great and we had a great time getting to know each other.

Christmas (not so mini) Session Part Four - The Lowe Family

Although this wasn't 'actually' a Mini Session it took place right in the middle of all my other mini sessions and took just as long!

The Lowe Family is another local Langdon couple, I met through the Langdon Living website and The Langdon Facebook pages. ( 1, 2 ) They were one of the latest evening family sessions I had done and their daughter was so well behaved for the whole session. It really was a pleasure to have them over to the studio.

Christmas Mini Sessions Part Three - Shelagh and her pups

The third session of my Mini Sessions was a little different than any other session I had done in the past. As this family of three had a few more legs than normal.

Shelagh brought her dogs to the studio and we had fun trying to get em to stay still for some photos. Thanks to her friend that came to help because I might not have gotten any pictures if he wasn't there with the treat bag!

Christmas Mini Session Part Two - The Oosterbroek Family

The Oosterbroek's have their daughter in my wife's day-home so it really wasn't anything new for me to take photos of her. What was new, though, was the fact that Mom and Dad were there. She was an angel as usual at first but when she found her favorite doll, she wanted nothing more than to play with it.

We had lot of fun and my children even helped us out for a while!

Christmas Mini Sessions Part One - The Jensen Family

This year I decided to offer some mini sessions for Christmas. The promo ran smoothly and I had so much fun meeting these families! In the end I had to extend my dates to accommodate a few extra!

Here is part one of those sessions and some of the pictures I captured in it.

First up was the Jensen Family. I had just recently done their Maternity Photos and Their Newborn session. When I offered my mini session they couldn't resist a Family Christmas Photo!

Always a pleasure to photograph this family and I hope to get the chance to do it again and again!

Every birthday we seem to decide to make a cake better than the last. You know you have to step it up each time right? Well I think we did a great job at that. We decided on the Caterpillar from Baby Einsteins. To do this we needed to make a ball cake..or 3...

We had a little help again from some great friends, Andrea and Jesse. They came over to help and we stayed up until nearly morning putting the final touches on the cake and cupcakes.

Cameron had a great day for his birthday and so many friends and family came by to celebrate with all of us! Thanks for coming everyone!

A year already has passed since he was born! It's hard to believe. They say that you have to cherish these times as they seem to fly by, and I have to say that whoever 'they' are, sure got it right!

Everyday I come home from work and I am welcomed home with smiles as bright as Christmas trees and excitement to see me, like I'm Santa (hehehe) with a big-bag-O-toys. In that second its gone, the memory of my day just seem to vanish. That feeling makes it all worth it.

I have had that feeling everyday for the past 6 years, but this last year I had a third reason. Another reason to be the best Dad that I can, and his name is Cameron. You may remember him from such movies as The Spaghetti Measurer or his first Blog post. Well now he's one...and I can't wait for the great times we are going to have in the coming years!

How do you make a cupcake disappear in under 30 seconds? Well, you just give it to my one year old. It's like magic!

The B Family - Calgary Family Photographer

On my Facebook I had said to watch for the teaser, but since I have all my editing done I skipped the teaser and it straight to a Full Post!

Last Sunday was a busy one with a few shoots to do. The day started with this awesome family! They came over to my studio and we had some fun getting their littlest one to warm up to the camera...when I first met her she was so friendly and open, right up to the minute I was going to leave. Then she was shy... as she was when she got into the studio. Her brother on the other hand needed no time to warm up and was quite happy to be in front of the camera!

We played with some toys and I gave her some time to get warmed up to me again, although we did end up having to bribe her a little in the end...I am not against it if you aren't!

Thanks guys for coming into my studio and letting me photograph your family.

New Website - Calgary and area Photographer

Chase Jensen - Calgary Newborn Photographer

Chase Jensen Born September 4th, weighed in at 7lbs 10oz.

I had the chance to photograph his mom just 2 days before he was actually born. (Remember?)

And was able to go back and photograph Chase just three weeks later.

This little guy is a cute as ever, and wasn't sleepy at all. The whole time I was shooting he was so aware of what was going on around him. His big brother was very helpful, making sure he has a toy to play with, or that he wasn't getting mad and going through all my gear asking if I needed any of the other things in my bag... Mom and Dad were worried, but as long as long as my 70-200mm didn't somehow make it down the stairs, I was good.

Thats right I said three weeks and holding his up like this!

Rachel and Steve Engaged - Calgary Portrait Photographer

Rachel and Steve are a couple that I am very happy to get the chance to shoot next year. They are constantly laughing and having a great time together.

Recently we got together and did some engagement photos and had a good time getting to know each other! As usual I ended up in a river, ran through traffic on the highway and broke some gear in the wind, pretty much a typical day shooting!

In the end we ended up getting some great shots and I can't wait till next year when we get to do it again.

Baby J - Calgary Maternity Photographer

Baby J is the second child of an old friend of mine. Already with one boy he and his wife were patiently waiting for the arrival of their second baby boy. Days before the due date I had the chance to go over to their house and take a few photos for them.

I will be shooting the newborn session for the little guy real soon and was going to post both the Maternity and Newborn sessions together but I just can't wait!
